Custom Sofa Price in India: What a Made-to-Order Sofa Actually Costs
The most common question about commissioning a bespoke sofa in India is also the hardest one to answer from a catalogue: what does it cost? Price varies enormously with material, size and complexity — and most studios, including ours, do not publish a price list because no two commissions are alike. But the broad ranges are consistent enough to be useful, and understanding what drives price up and down is the first step to commissioning well.
This is a transparent guide to custom sofa pricing in India. The figures below are indicative, not quotes — reach out for a personalised estimate for your specific brief.
What You Are Actually Paying For
Before the numbers, it helps to understand the cost structure. A bespoke sofa commission in India has four main cost components:
- Frame: The solid-wood or engineered-wood structure that gives the sofa its shape. This is the largest cost driver after fabric and the most important quality differentiator.
- Upholstery fabric or leather: Material costs range from a few hundred rupees per metre to several thousand, and a 3-seater sofa requires 15 to 20 metres.
- Labour: Skilled carpentry for the frame and skilled upholstery labour for the finishing — both are specialised trades in Delhi NCR.
- Design service: Site visit, design drawings, revisions and project coordination. At Walnut Studio, this is included in the commission cost.
Price Ranges by Category
| Sofa Type | Frame | Indicative Range |
|---|---|---|
| 2-seater, straight, solid sheesham | Solid wood | ₹55,000 – ₹90,000 |
| 3-seater, straight, solid sheesham | Solid wood | ₹80,000 – ₹1,30,000 |
| 3-seater, solid walnut, Italian linen | Solid walnut | ₹1,50,000 – ₹2,50,000 |
| L-shaped sectional, solid wood | Solid wood | ₹1,20,000 – ₹2,20,000 |
| Chaise sectional, solid walnut, leather | Solid walnut | ₹2,00,000 – ₹3,50,000 |
These ranges assume mid-to-premium Indian fabric. Italian leather, Belgian linen and other imported materials add ₹30,000 to ₹80,000 depending on the quantity required.
Frame Material: The Biggest Quality Variable
The frame determines how long the sofa lasts and how it ages. The three main options for a bespoke commission in India:
Engineered wood (MDF, plywood): The entry point for custom sofas in Delhi. Structurally adequate when well-made, but susceptible to moisture over time and unlikely to last more than 8 to 12 years with regular use. Used by most mid-market upholsterers.
Sheesham (Indian rosewood): Dense, hard and termite-resistant. Sheesham is the working wood of North Indian furniture and is excellent value for a bespoke frame. It machines and joints well and ages without warping.
Walnut: Lighter in colour than sheesham with a finer grain. Walnut is the premium choice for frames where the legs and arm ends are exposed — it finishes beautifully and carries the same structural properties as sheesham at a higher material cost.
At Walnut Studio, all bespoke furniture commissions use solid sheesham or walnut frames. We do not use engineered wood in structural components.
How Fabric Affects Price
Fabric is where there is the most room to move. A 3-seater requires roughly 15 to 20 metres of upholstery fabric. At the broad ranges available in India:
- Performance cotton blends (Indian): ₹400–800/m. Practical, cleanable, good for households with children or pets.
- Velvet and textured weaves (Indian): ₹800–1,500/m. More dramatic in appearance, require more careful maintenance.
- Belgian linen / European natural fabrics: ₹1,500–3,500/m. The premium tier. Beautiful, durable, and expensive to clean if stained.
- Top-grain leather (Indian tanneries): ₹2,000–4,000/m. The most durable upholstery option, ages well, and is easier to clean than fabric.
How Custom Compares to Imports
The most useful pricing comparison is not to ready-made Indian furniture but to imported luxury sofas, which many buyers in Delhi NCR consider alongside a bespoke commission. A comparable sofa from a European luxury brand — same frame quality, similar material specification — will cost 3 to 5 times more than a Walnut Studio commission, after import duties and freight. Lead times for imports run 12 to 20 weeks. Our bespoke commissions deliver in 6 to 10 weeks, with a site visit, custom dimensions and post-delivery service included.
